Gaming: Dragons Dogma’s Dragon Fight Is The Best Boss I’ve Ever Fought *Spoiler Warning*

I’ve recently been playing through a fantastic game called Dragons Dogma and I’ve also recently completed it. It’s been a while since a game has made me go “Oh wow” and “this is brilliant!” so when I progressed through the game and arrived to face the big bad dragon, I had the looming sense of dread in my head where I honestly thought that this task to kill this dragon wasn’t in my means at all.

Grigori, the dragon
You’d feel nervous if this was looming over you.

Besides from having the best voice I’ve ever heard in a video game (David Lodge, you are beautiful) but the boss fight itself is one of the best things I’ve ever played in a video game. Down right honest. The thing with Dragons Dogma is you start off being especially weak and confused to the workings of how Dragons Dogma works. You progress very slowly, you find out there’s no fast travel system to start with (you have to set it up yourself) so there’s a lot of walking everywhere and getting ambushed by enemies that could easily put you in the grave. On top of that, there’s nigh to no checkpoint system so if you make a lot of progress and don’t save, you’ll have to do it all again.

As you go on with the game, you get better and better and you can feel your characters progress. You raise your levels, unlock more skills for your characters and you start to feel a badass. So you continue with the story and, eventually, you get to the dragon. It doesn’t matter how strong you are at this point, you look at the dragon and you just think to yourself, “I can’t do this”.

However, after running through this boss fight, the fear goes away and you have one of the most epic boss fights I’ve ever had a pleasure to take part in. All the effort and time you’ve put into this game has accumulated into this one direct moment.

And by God, it’s perfect.

I recommend buying the game cheaply, The Dark Arisen copy as it comes with all the DLC, and getting to this point by yourself. For the impatient who want to see it now, I’ll attach a video link below.

A Forgotten Relic: Black and White 2

If you read my previous post on From Dust, you’ll know I get a bit excited about God games. It’s a shame that not as many are being created any more, Lionhead pretty much nailed this down with great classics like Dungeon Keeper and Populous under their belt. As mentioned previously, Populous: The Beginning is my favourite game, it’s so good if you can look past the outdated graphics, I plug it immensely.

But another Lionhead classic I have to talk about is something I’ve recently reinstalled from my dusty desk of old PC games that still hide in the dark with PC cases. Black and White 2.

Now this game is unique. I mean, seriously unique. Not only do you have a tiny creature that casually grows into a massive behemoth that you can teach spells, you can also lead a little town and build it from the ground up. There IS a similar aspect of the simple town building concept within it but it’s handled in a different way, similar to Banished. You assign people roles and they do them but you can’t control those villagers. We’ll talk about Banished in another post as that’s also worth a mention.

Enough about the tittle tattle of my ol’ 23 mug, here what I consider the best thing about Black and White 2. I wont swear this time. Honest.

1. YOU CAN TRAIN A GIANT ANIMAL TO HELP BUILD A HOUSE

Evil Giant Awesome Cow
A HIP THRUSTING EVIL GIANT COW, HOW CAN I BUY THIS AGAIN

2. YOU CAN TRAIN THE SAME ANIMAL TO SUMMON VOLCANO’S

3. YOU CAN ASSIGNS “BREEDERS”, MULTIPLY PEOPLE

4. YOUR MAIN ENEMY IS THE FRIGGIN’ AZTECS

5. DID I MENTION THAT YOU’RE A GOD?!

6. EVER WANTED TO SEE A GIANT ANIMAL KICK AROUND PEOPLE?! WELL, HERE YOU GO!

Just 6 points of so many things, I couldn’t continue without diving into the game itself and setting the Aztecs on fire over and over.

The Future: Young and Worried

As of now, I’m currently attending the University of Huddersfield, soon to be graduating with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.

I’m the first In my family to go to University, just like a lot of people. I’ve done quite a few things here, I’ve visited the BBC in Salford, even managed to whisk my way in to discuss changes to the BBC3’s conversion to an online format. Filmed 2 documentaries, about trains and buses (Where’s my Oscar?!), taken on personal projects such as building my own website to serve as a legacy website for the Tour De France, where I also worked with ITV Leeds. My content got on TV! Small but significant victory!

ITV Sofa.
The seat was comfier than you’d think. I’d get paid to sit on comfy things.

Even out of University, I started my own business, Gigsets, a music journalism site and events management type business. Recruited people, paid them, we nearly had our own proper offices as well. Not to forget the large festival we made with over 30 bands! Sadly, it was doomed due to financial losses due to the festival (which I didn’t approve of to begin with) so I high-tailed it out of there before the festival started.

Launchfest
If you look “overkill” in the dictionary, you will see this picture.

I’ve done other things as well, tried the Youtubeing thing, podcast, radio etc etc but you know what?

I’m still worried for my future.

My current role is Project Producer at a place in Huddersfield called The Media Centre. It was set up by the University as a sort of placement idea. I was interviewed for the role of Producer and boom. Beat out the others in my class for it.

I enjoy it. But it doesn’t pay. And to move from this to being paid for similar work isn’t easy. That’s what I’m worried about. That I’ve gone to University, done all these things and that they will amount to working at McDonalds (shoutout to the crazy Chicken McNuggets).

Even with contacts at ITV, the BBC and tons more reputable people, I’m just.. worried, ya’ know?

This all stems from recently applying for the ITV Traineeship Scheme of 2015 and not getting in. I was disappointed in myself. I had some naive confidence that all the work I’ve put in up until now would result in becoming a trainee at ITV. It wasn’t. I don’t think I was anywhere near.

But it has lead to something. In other terms, I’d say it was a ‘level up’ kinda situation. I’m the kind of guy that is too stubborn to give up when it’s all over. I feel as if I need to keep going, to keep trying as hard as I can to reach.. something. I don’t know what it is. It’s a need. Something inside me just reaches out for success. It doesn’t have to be making tons of money, it’s a personal success, to achieve a job that’s not just wasting my time flipping burgers for minimum wage. But I don’t even know if I’m going to get past it. It just seems.. unreachable.

If it gets to that point, I guess I’ll start being an entrepreneur again. I have ideas that could work. Ideas at least worth trying.

I guess you could say I’m uneasy about what is to come. I bet most of the people who applied for the Traineeships positions and didn’t get in are also the same. I reach out to those guys and gals. I want to say “It’ll be ok, you’ll be fine” but I’d feel hypocritical because I don’t even know what’s going to happen to me.

If you were to take anything from reading this, I would say don’t give up. I’d say that failure can be a mind killer or a motivator. Just use it as a motivator, ok? This applies to everything. Just get back on up that horse and ride again, faster this time.

Je Suis Charlie: Defending Freedom of Expression Depends on All of Us

A post about the attacks in France on Charlie Hebdo. It’s important to remember that freedom of speech is a necessary right to uphold and defend, not only for bloggers but for everyone who needs a voice.

When I heard about the attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo I was speechless. I have been writing about press freedom and violence against journalists for half a decade, but in the wake of these killings words failed me.

Words did not fail others however.

Within an hour of hearing about the attack I saw the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie gaining traction online. A few hours after that, journalists in newsrooms around the globe began posting pictures of themselves holding Je Suis Charlie signs. And by that night people were in the streets from Paris to San Francisco chanting “Je Suis Charlie.”

A Forgotton Relic: From Dust [Explicit Language Warning]

As I’m currently trying to make sure my villagers aren’t set on fire by trees sent by Satan himself, I thought “Should probably write about this game” seeing as how I’m quite enjoying it. It’s no Populous: The Beggining, which is my favourite game in the world, it’s still a God game and I love God games. Now if only Steam would bring the Black and White franchise over to its platform, I’d be a happy chappy in that case.

But let’s talk From Dust. After searching through my download history on the ol’ trusty and faithful Xbox 360, I came across this little gem I must have purchased a few years back. I do remember being BORED of it after a few games but now that I’m older, but not by a lot, I find myself enjoying this little relic. It had hype but it pretty much got buried after a few months which is a shame really. It’s a magnificent concept executed well, I can’t find fault with it. The physics engine works great and it forces you to think creatively. If I don’t use lava to build a wall, a tsunami might come in and kill my villagers. If I try to divert water there, the stream might decide to angle itself in a way of giving my villagers a nice salty wash. It’s graceful in its execution.

But forget about all that, well don’t as I just wrote it, here’s my top set number of things about this game. This is where the language comes in, purely for emotional appreciation.

*cough*

8. FANCY A BATH, LITTLE VILLAGER?! WHY DON’T YOU SET FIRE TO A WATER PLANT?! YOU’LL BE CLEAN! AND I’M SURE THE REST OF THE VILLAGERS ARE DOWN THE STREAM SOMEWHERE, HOPEFULLY, RIGHT?!

As you can see, this game is awesome. I recommend you spare it a few pounds or dollars, or euros, whatever your currency is and give it a little try. Don’t forget to take a few breaks whilst playing as whilst it can get frustrating, you’ll need to recharge those batteries.

Boosting Confidence For The Humans That Live In Their Heads

There seems to be a stage in life where our own weaknesses have a serious impact on our day to day goings. A good percentage of people lack a crucial means to progressing and growing. Confidence.

Baby me was born with the swag.
Baby me was born with the swag.

I didn’t have the benefit of starting out full of vigour and muscle. I was a heavily introverted boy and everything scared me. Everything! I have a distinct memory of myself overhearing a conversation whilst I was a little nipper in primary school. I remember observing it and thinking to myself, “How are they doing that? How do they talk to each other?”.

I didn’t know how to have a conversation. It was alien to me. Looking back, I could tell my little self that you did know how to have a conversation, you just weren’t interested in what flavour fruit shoot they had this morning.

There are people not living at this stage in their lives, some people find it very hard to move on from this. As I was a very shy person growing up, I hope to give you guys and gals some tips on how to progress through the hardships and earn the confidence you seek.

Tip #1: Comfort Zones

The most successful method I used was identifying what made me scared and anxious and putting all the will power I can muster to push myself into the heart of the situation. Now, don’t get me wrong, this takes a hell of a lot of heart to do this but it is a powerful motivator to keep doing the same thing. It wasn’t long before I realised that most of my fear and anxiety was irrational. Being in those situations, I realised my mind had over-hyped what was actually going on. If you ever come across the situation where you’re scared, head straight for it and see what happens. 1 outcome is that you have a big, massive revelation. The other is that your fear was real. Regardless, it’s important to break out of the trap that is your comfort zone. You’re doing yourself no good if you stay in it.

Tip #2: Stick to your morales

Lack of confidence can sometimes mean lack of faith in your own morality and ideals. Standing up for something against someone who heavily opposes you can do wonders and also annoy the person who is obviously wrong, right?

In this case, your morales can be bad, be good, be unjustified, be completely ridiculous but this is about confidence. Your morality will change overtime into something more ideal to YOU and it is important that you steal yourself and make pure, strong choices based on those ideals.

As an example, every year I give £1 to every homeless person in my town but I refuse to give more than that. I’m an asshole, right? Well, my morality tells me that evidence is being given that governments are helping the homeless get off the street and that anyone who is still asking for spare change has chosen to be there because it’s easier than getting a job. Now, this is my most controversial topic of morality that is me as I know that not every situation is the same. But I sure as hell am not giving more than a £1 to a homeless person. In standing by this, I develop the confidence to stand up for it. This spreads out into other aspects in your life. So go be irrational if you have to be, ok?

Tip #3: Don’t be ashamed to be yourself

Society has a very mean way of letting you know that you’re a wierdo or average. It isn’t the case. The fact that you’re here proves that you have something to show to the world.

I like playing video games, especially JRPG’s and anime games when I can. I used to think that everyone else only bought FIFA and CALL of Duty games and that I was the only one giving these companies their reward for making a game I’m interested in.

I used to be ashamed of this, I was never proud of it for some reason. It was an irrational fear to have. But I’m now proud and outspoken about it. Not to the point where I tell everyone in every conversation that I do prefer them but if anyone brings up the topic and asks me, I’ll let them know. I wont hide it.

The responses I thought I would get would be negative. But they weren’t, it turned out that people either didn’t care, thought it was cool or played the same games.

The point is that you shouldn’t hide yourself away because you’re scared of the backlash. Be modest and humble but be proud. Stop hiding those little things and saying that you go to the gym and go out and get drunk all the time when the most interested thing is that you draw sketches of video games characters. True story for one of my friends.

Confidence IS important to unlocking the 100% within you. You owe it to yourself to let the world know that you’re coming for it. Either to kick it to pieces or hug it. It doesn’t matter.

Just do one of the 2.

INFJ and ENFJ: Relationships, Emotions and Love

Left: INFJ/ Right: ENFJ

As you can see above, there is an INFJ and an ENFJ. A Protector and a Giver.

I’m the guy on the left. I’ve chosen to write a self-exploration of our relationship to help others who seek the guidance for this pairing.

If you’ve found this page, you’re either fresh to the Myers Briggs personality theorem or you’re an expert and this may be something you’ve needed to read.

I’ll try not to disappoint.

I’ll start with what our types are and mean.

INFJ

I: Introverted

N: Intuitive

F: Feeling

J: Judgement

Functions: Introverted Intuition, Extroverted Feeling, Introverted Thinking and Extroverted Sensing. If confused, please research Myers Briggs functions. All types have their own unique set on how we process information.

Introversion dictates how we recover our human energy. Introverts have a very wide open dopamine canal. Which means we react to things a lot more than Extroverts would. For example, I wouldn’t be able to socialise as long in a social setting which inhabits a crowd of over, let’s say, 6 people. The giant influx of information a human being exhausts, which I’m sure you know, can be taxing when you’re receiving that information for a long sustained time. Introverts recharge their batteries by letting themselves recover in solitude or with a small group of very close friends.

Intuition is how we create threads of information in our head. It can be described as a sixth sense, a gut feeling. They present a concept and THEN go into the details of it. Idea creators are the core definition of what intuition ultimately is. Very imaginative, Intuitive’s lead with a fresh instinct, almost like gambling but for every life situation. This may be difficult to understand. Please research if you wish to know more.

Feeling is what it says on the tin. It can means two different things if it’s introverted feeling or extroverted. INFJ’s and ENFJ’s have extroverted feeling so I’ll describe that. It can be described as empathy. Being able to absorb others emotions. You feel what they feel and it effects you as it effects them. Extroverted feelers tend to be more sensitive than introverted feelers due to being aware of the effects of their actions. They tip-toe around tough topics and tend to work out the easiest way to approach an emotionally taxing situation in the carefullest way possible, for themselves and for others. Introverted Feeling can also be researched if you want something to compare this description with. My short summary of introverted feeling is the ability to know yourself, putting yourself first over others. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not as ‘evil’ as it sounds.

Thinking is the processing of information. Many different thinkers can either process the information inside their heads or write information down in highly structural methods i.e. graphs, lists etc. People find it hard to identify the difference between intuition and thinking. The difference is intuitive’s create information, thinkers organise information.

Judgement is the way we guide ourselves through life. J’s tend to be more organised with their decisions, being less spontaneous with their choices. Note: judgement isn’t identified by how clean someone’s desk is. Usually, morality is a good indicator as J’s tend to stick to their guns if they either like something or don’t like something.

With the ENFJ, the above descriptions will suffice to describe the letters. I’ll still cover the E so it’s clear.

ENFJ

E: Extroverted
N: Intuitive
F: Feeling
J: Judgement

Functions: Extroverted Feeling, Introverted Intuition, Extroverted Sensing and Introverted Thinking

Extroversion, like said above, is how energy is expended. Remember the dopamine line? With E’s, imagine that the dopamine is being sifted through a funnel. They expend it VERY slowly. This is why you see the majority of extroverts in clubs and at parties, surrounded by people. They’re trying to expend it. Staying inside for them can be explained in a description. Imagine your brain is creating dopamine all the time and it keeps filling your head, you’re full of energy. You’d go out all the time if you wished to avoid that headache.

Comparison

The main difference here is the E and the I. One letter change in a type can create very different personalities and very similar ones. Remembering the note after explaining the INFJ letters, every type has functions that help us process information. INFJ and ENFJ have the same functions BUT they’re in a different order. Thinking that a change in the order of functions isn’t much? Guess again.

The order of functions play a big part. The one that we start with, in my case, introverted intuition, is the main one I use, it’s the one I’ve used since I was a child and probably the only one I used at all. Other functions come in later on in life. So I live primary in my head, seeing the world with red strings connecting everything. now ENFJ’s, they lead with extroverted feeling. Take that in for a second… done? Ok.

Extroverted Feeling is my second function but I’m extremely familiar with it. All these intense emotions, all the time. But I’m lucky enough that the feelings I feel have to go through the intuition, like a filter, so I usually internalise my feelings before I send them out into the world. It can be seen as unhealthy due to repressing it all but it’s something we naturally do. ENFJ’s don’t have a filter. It’s emotion all the time. They’ve been reading people and taking in emotions since they were kids and they remember everything that ever effected them in a huge way, it shapes their personalities. The contrast here is that they show their feelings and THEN they put it through their intuition. Put yourself in an ENFJ’s shoes and imagine you’ve effected someone in a negative way by exerting your feelings. Then imagine thinking about it once you’ve done it. It’s not easy for the ENFJ, I’ll admit.

Let’s Get Personal

I’m 23 and my ENFJ is 20. We’ve been together for just under 2 and a half years. We met at University and within two weeks, we became boyfriend and girlfriend. I’m unusually confident for an INFJ due to my best friend being an ESTP, whose functions are a direct mirror of mine. I still feel anxiety heavily but through my best friends subliminal and subconscious hints, I worked out that I could use it as a motivator. This results in a motivated INFJ.

Now when I first saw my ENFJ, something clicked in my head. The intuitive gut feeling told me that this girl is interesting. A rarity for me. Initially, she was closed off and stand offish but with the power of the INFJ insight and some knowledge of Carl Jung’s teachings, I knew she was hiding her true self due to the new environment we were both in. Note: Sounds creepy to know this much, I know, but this is how strong an INFJ’s intuition and feeling is.

We became closer. Eventually, she invited herself over to my place after, she told me, she realised that trying to get a WiFi connection by sitting near her door could be rectified by just visiting me at my dorm. I agreed. We chilled well into the night watching DVD’s and eventually fell asleep.

The rest is history. Now we’re living together and we’re soon to be finishing our final year at University.

The Dynamics of our Relationship: INFJ and ENFJ

Note: I’ll be speaking in third person to not single out my ENFJ. I’ll be giving insight about INFJ’s also.

As brief as can possibly be, with the INFJ, you have an intense and quiet partner who loves extremely deeply. With the ENFJ, you have a partner who requires emotional validation and loyalty who also loves extremely deeply.

INFJ’s absorb feelings so if you wish to enter a relationship with an ENFJ, I recommend that you be EMOTIONALLY STABLE. You have to be emotionally tough as ENFJ’s will show intense emotion at regular intervals, good and bad emotions. ENFJ’s, I recommend that you take your INFJ’s silence not as neglect but that INFJ’s need their space to get back on form now and again.

INFJ’s and ENFJ’s will both see aspects of themselves within each other. You are essentially viewing your own personality in a different order. This can prove to be an advantage in developing yourself, the INFJ can teach how to maintain your emotions and ENFJ’s can teach how to be more open with interacting with the world and organisation skills. The second advantage is they’re the same functions so you don’t have to worry that you’re progressing down the wrong route as you will eventually develop the functions of your partner, with patience and drive behind you.

If you go ahead with a relationship with an INFJ/ENFJ, be prepared for a very intense and intelligent relationship. The ability of an NFJ is that emotional intelligence is mandatory to being one. Expect to be loved like you’ve never been loved before and if you have been loved like that, they will find another way to love you. It will take more effort than the usual relationship as it requires you to put in the effort to nurture each other and understand one another. The payout will be a great one. As the effort you put in will produce a very rewarding and happy relationship. But bare in mind that there will be the odd problem that will come out of nowhere. But if you work through it, you will find happiness.

If you’re seeking or are in an INFJ/ENFJ relationship, comment with your own experience on your relationship and add another perspective!

NOTE: I WOULD LOVE FOR AN ENFJ IN AN ENFJ/INFJ RELATIONSHIP TO ADD THEIR OWN PERSPECTIVE. PLEASE COMMENT IF YOU WISH TO ADD MORE!

Super Smash Bros. Wii U – Amiibos, Pokemon and Assists

Copyright: Nintendo

As I’m sitting here, watching my Link Amiibo, Sparda, wreck shop on 8 player Smash, 99 stock at level 50 as he collects items I lack the drive to acquire myself, let’s take a look back at the immaculate concept of what actually is Smash Brothers.

OH MY GENTLE JESUS
Copyright: Nintendo

We all grew up at some point (surprising, ey?) and only now have the past couple of generations have been surrounded by technology that can be consumed and interacted with. This includes video games, obviously. A good few of us played the magic that is Super Mario Bros. on the NES. As we pressed buttons, we watched the burly red plumber jump and run at enemies and, occasionally, if you remember old game difficulty, fall down holes and slightly nudge Goombas which, somehow, result in a death that sends you into the air and off the very fabric of the world itself.

We grew a connection to that character and this was the start of such connections. The dots and vehicles that inhabited the screen had evolved into a personality with a name and a background. Everybody knows Mario because we were that collection of pixels on the screen since the very start of it all, being the reaper over the on screen persons life and death.

Well, apart from the green mushrooms that popped out of the question blocks. Don’t get me started about the back story of Mario blocks, it’s too.. what’s the word.. manic?

Que the horror story music.
Copyright: Nintendo

But leading on from this, a wave of story driven games with personalities embraced our screens. We pressed those buttons and became the characters on the screen over and over again. A decade later when more Nintendo games came out in droves and captured our hearts, such as Donkey Kong, Kirby and the one series that has my time travelling bro’ in it, Zelda, we were living adventures in our homes, an introverts paradise.

So this game came out of nowhere when consoles were starting to progress on the idea of 3 glorious dimensions. This game was the glorious birth of what can be simplified in a sentence. Brace for the swearing.

LET’S GET SOME NINTENDO CHARACTERS AND GET THEM TO FUCK EACH OTHER UP.
HNNNGGGGGGGG
Copyright: Nintendo

I mean, this idea was titanic in proportion, nobody even thought that other game characters could even perform in the same game together, let alone beat the crap out of one another.

Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64 came out. Now I was a PS1 owner at the time and I had only heard that the N64 existed, let alone the games. I was introduced to it when I was hanging with a group of my cousin’s friends. It blew my mind when I saw what was going on. I couldn’t believe it, Mario getting smacked about by DK. It’s a memory that hasn’t left me!

Now, we can move on to the current day. 2 more games later, we have arrived at Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS. I only have the Wii U version so I’ll avoid commenting about the 3DS version.

There was so much hype for this, after Melee and Brawl, what could they do next? Obvious answers would be to add more characters and stages. Which they did. Villager from Animal Crossing, Wii Fit Trainer from.. Wii.. Fit.. and others like Dark Pit from Icarus, Shulk from Valkyrie etc etc

“Now please enter the ‘I’m kicking your ass’ position”
Copyright: Nintendo

Now my favourite thing about these games isn’t being Link and spamming projectiles from the other side of the stage (Sorry, I’M SORRY!), it was items. Items that introduce even MORE characters into the battle. More specifically, Pokemon and Assists.

I LOVE the Pokemon aspect, not only do you have the majesty of throwing a Pokeball directly into someone else’s face and occasionally, crotch, it even unleashes the Pokemon inside. You could get the Legendary overkiller, Goldeen, who strikes fear in all or Arceus, WHO CREATED LIFE. It feels almost like the time somebody injected strawberry flavouring into ice cream, it tastes sooooo good! Assists are the same, I enjoy watching my girlfriend squeal when her favourite Nintendo character, Waluigi, comes out of nowhere and stomps me into the ground whilst yelling “WHAAAHAHAHAHA” to accompany the tears that slide out of my eyeholes.

But the best thing Nintendo ever did for the Wii U and Smash Bros was Amiibos. Cheapish, depending on your budget, quite accurate models with NFC codes attached onto them. You pop them into Smash and you train them. It feels personal and nice when you can take something physical and make it virtual. Sure, when you peel the skin from the satsuma, it’s a model with a chip on the bottom but the overall feel and majesty of it is exciting, especially to small children and people who probably don’t have that much knowledge when it comes to technology, it can be perceived as magic.

Plus, taking it to your friends house who doesn’t have an Amiibo, betting money that they wont be able to beat it and them thinking “Can’t be that hard” is deliciously malicious.

Have a favourite experience with Smash, Amiibos, the assists and Pokemon? Let me know in the comments!
